Leah: The Woman Who Was Unseen, Yet Deeply Loved by God

Leah was a woman familiar with rejection, comparison, and the deep ache of feeling unwanted. As the eldest daughter of Laban and the first wife of Jacob, Leah’s story unfolds in Genesis 29. She was given to Jacob through deceit, in a marriage he never asked for—one that made her feel like second-best to her younger sister, Rachel, whom Jacob truly loved.

Despite being unloved by her husband, Leah was never overlooked by God. He saw her pain and opened her womb, blessing her with children. Each time she named her sons, her heart revealed her longing to be seen and cherished—until her fourth son, Judah. With his birth, Leah shifted her focus from people’s approval to praising God: “This time I will praise the Lord” (Genesis 29:35).

Leah’s journey teaches us that healing begins when we stop striving for love in the wrong places and begin recognizing the love God has always had for us. Though she felt rejected by man, Leah was chosen by God to birth a legacy. Through her lineage came the tribe of Judah, King David, and ultimately Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world.

Leah reminds us that even in seasons of feeling unloved, God sees, God hears, and God chooses us to carry something greater than our pain—purpose.
